Does Akpeyi's Heroics Mean He Deserves To Be Chiefs' Number One?

Does Akpeyi's Heroics Mean He Deserves To Be Chiefs' Number One?

Lebogang Manyama scored the all-important goal, but it was Daniel Akpeyi who ultimately secured the Soweto derby win for Kaizer Chiefs with a string of unbelievable saves.

Fans have their say on whether the Nigerian should replace Itumeleng Khune as the club's number one.

Akpeyi joined Amakhosi in January 2019 as an emergency replacement for Khune, who was ruled out for a lengthy period with a shoulder injury.

Bruce Bvuma deputised for Khune in the first few matches, however, this was a role that Akpeyi soon occupied.

Akpeyi has deputized excellently since taking up the reins in the Amakhosi goalkeeping department, although it must be said that occasionally, he is error prone as seen in the Maritzburg United match.

Khune has since returned to full fitness and many would have expected him to walk straight into the starting XI, Akpeyi's sterling performances however, have prevented that from happening.

Khune did feature in Chiefs' Nedbank Cup last 16 defeat to Highlands Park and despite his impressive display, could not prevent his team from being bundled out on penalties as he failed to make a single save.

It came as a bit of a surprise when Ernst Middendorp selected Akpeyi ahead of Khune for the Soweto Derby, but the 33-year-old rewarded his coach's belief with a heroic display, he also had the full support of Khune from the sidelines.

Fans have had their say on who they think should be the team's first choice in the last stretch of Amakhosi's title charge, something they have not achieved since the 2014/15 season.
