Several teams in the PSL, as well as GladAfrica Championship side TS Galaxy, have expressed their frustrations with continental football over the years. Kaizer Chiefs, Bidvest Wits TS Galaxy have voiced concerns with the cost and overall governance of CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup competitions, raising questions as to the value of qualifying for the tournaments.
Speaking to SL Radio, Stan Matthews stated, "I've made no bones about the fact that I would love to finish 4th, that way we dodge the continental bullet and still achieve something of a good milestone for us. I've said it [before] and I'll say it again, Africa (right now) is too far for us as a club. You can't expect to go and take on the African continent when you can't conquer your own domestic league.
"How can we expect to juggle a very tough and competitive PSL domestic fixture list, with a very gruelling and difficult and strenuous African campaign? We nearly got relegated 2 years ago when we tried to juggle on all those fronts," he continues.
In the full interview, Matthews also discusses the PSL's return and how teams in the league have lost sponsors due to COVID-19.
