As previously reported by the Siya crew, defender Fawaaz Basadien had landed on the radar of both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Following his inclusion by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos for the Africa Cup of Nations preliminary squad, there was even more interest – apparently. But later on, Stellenbosch FC chief executive officer Rob Benadie confirmed to SABC Sport that the club had triggered the year on Basadien's contract.
This now means the left back remains tied to the side from the Winelands until June 2025 and can only leave if a significant bid comes in. According to sources within the Stellies camp, the hierarchy could be swayed into allowing Basadien to leave should a solid offer be put on the table.
Stellies, who are highflyers this season and have already won the club's first-ever trophy in the Carling Knockout, have not stood in the way of players wanting to move on to greener pastures. The list is long – from Zitha Kwinika, Ashley Du Preez, Olwethu Makhanya, Siboniso Mthethwa and Junior Mendieta… there's always a price.
It's understood the sentiments around Basadien are not different, and the 27-year-old, signed from Moroka Swallows last season, can be sold if the offer tabled for his service meets the club's valuation.
