Bongani Zungu could be set for the third positional change in his career after once again excelling in an unfamiliar new role.
Zungu put on a five-star performance at centre back for Amiens as they romped to a 3-0 Ligue 2 victory over Nimes last week.
It wasn't the first time that the 29-year-old was used at centre back by the French outfit, which has raised questions over whether Zungu would be making the switch on a more permanent basis.
Earlier in his career, Zungu shot onto the scene as an attacking midfielder whilst on the books of the University of Pretoria. However, the player was converted into a holding midfielder while under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane, a position where he shone for both Mamelodi Sundowns and for Bafana Bafana.
Zungu possesses all the traits to fulfill the position of a defender - with the right amount of aggression, anticipation and a second-to-none reading of the game, which puts him in good stead if he were to change positions permanently.
"It was difficult for me to play in this position, but we worked on it this week in training and I had Formose and Mamadou with me who did not stop communicating with me. As the match progressed, I felt better but it was difficult because Nîmes was playing very well. My defense partners helped me a lot," Zungu told Le11amienois after the match.
With Zungu's contract with the Ligue 2 outfit set to come to an end in just three months' time, it remains to be seen whether he will continue in his revised role or be restored to a familiar central midfielder at his new club.
