Orlando Pirates Could Make Nedbank Cup History

Orlando Pirates could make history on Saturday afternoon if they claim victory in this year's edition of the Nedbank Cup. Read: Tinkler Eyeing Nedbank Cup The Buccaneers will come up against Stuart Baxter's SuperSport United side at the Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow as they seek to claim the trophy for the third time. Though Kaizer Chiefs have won the cup 13 times in many formats over the years, no other team has won it more than twice since Nedbank took over the sponsorship of this knockout competition in 2008. In fact, Bucs and Mamelodi Sundowns are the only teams that have claimed the title twice. Pirates first lifted the trophy in the 2010/11 season under Dutch mentor Ruud Krol after they thrashed Black Leopards 3-1 in the final, courtesy of a goal by Isaac Chansa and a Thulasizwe Mbuyane brace. In 2013/14, during former Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic's tenure, Bucs came out tops against Bidvest Wits by the same scoreline - with a brace from Kermit Erasmus and a single strike from Sifiso Myeni sealing the win. With Sundowns out of the running, after suffering a 2-0 defeat by Eric Tinkler's charges in the semi-finals, the Mayfair outfit have the chance to not only savage their disappointing season, but also an opportunity to return to Africa in the form of the CAF Confederation Cup.
