Nedbank Cup Report: Free State Stars 2-4 Orlando Pirates 14 May 2016
Nedbank Cup   Result: Free State Stars 2-4 Orlando Pirates   Date: 14 May 2016   Venue: Goble Park   Orlando Pirates clinched their spot in the Nedbank Cup final after a 4-2 win over Free State Stars on Saturday.   View the PSL Table   The visitors had the first chance of the game in the third minute when Luvuyo Memela picked out Issa Sarr with a corner kick, but his header at goal was over the bar.   Brighton Mhlongo made his first save in the 18th minute as Lucky Mohomi whipped a free kick towards his far post. The goalkeeper did well to get down to his left and make the stop.   Bucs seemed to take the lead when Tendai Ndoro pounced on a loose ball after a parried save from Mathole, but he was flagged offside after putting the ball in the back of the net.   The breakthrough arrived in the 24th minute as Memela curled in a free kick and Mohomi accidentally headed the ball past his own goalkeeper for 1-0.   Stars had a great chance to level matters when a counter attack gave Danny Venter a one-on-one with Mhlongo, but his shot was weak and straight at the gloveman.   However, Pirates were two goals clear in the 38th minute. Memela got the ball just outside the box and he took a touch to make room before placing his shot into the far bottom corner of the goal.
Ea Lla Koto started the second half positively and came close to scoring as Mohomi hit Mhlongo's far post with a strike in the 53rd minute.   Two minutes later Stars reduced the gap to one goal. A free kick was not dealt with by the Bucs defence, allowing Nkosi to pounce and hammer home the hosts' opener.   In the 76th minute some frustration from the Stars coach Giovanni Solinas resulted in a verbal outburst directed at the officials which saw him sent into the stands.   Stars were still in with a shot until late in the game, but in the 85th minute Memela secured Pirates' final berth with a composed finish for a 3-1 victory.   That lead grew further a few minutes later as Thamsanqa Gabuza pounced on a loose ball to fire home his side's fourth from close range.   The goals kept coming in stoppage time as Mohomi produced a brilliant free kick, finding the back of Mhlongo's net with aplomb to improve the scoreline for the hosts.
