A former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana defender has explained why the high-flying Brazilians were unable to make it beyond the quarter finals of this season's Nedbank Cup.
Buchanan's Best XI Dominated By Chiefs Downs Stars
Pitso Mosimane's men, who have won the Telkom Knockout and Absa Premiership titles this season, were knocked out by Orlando Pirates at the quarter-final stage of the competition, conceding two goals in extra time against Orlando Pirates. Now, former Downs defender, Matthew Booth, has explained that the loss was inevitable.
"The league is so competitive and they've been so successful this season," the former Bafana Bafana player to Soccer Laduma. "They were bound to lose at some point…"
The 39-year-old went on to say that it's the way that cup football works and, despite their quality, Sundowns' place in the competition was never guaranteed.
"They only lost three times in the league, but that's the beauty of cup football," he continued. "The in-form team doesn't always go through."
Orlando Pirates have progressed to the final of this season's Nedbank Cup and will face SuperSport United in the showpiece event at the Peter Mokaba Stadium next Saturday, 28 May, at 15:00.
