Last season City ended their 2016/17 Absa Premiership campaign in third place on the league standings, accomplishing more than expected in their inaugural campaign.

In their first domestic cup competition, the Mother City-based club progressed through to the semi-finals of the 2016 MTN8 competition, where they were then knocked out by defending champions, Bidvest Wits.

Now, the Citizens will get the new domestic campaign underway with a quarterfinal 2017 MTN8 clash against Polokwance City at the Cape Town Stadium and McCarthy has high hopes for his squad, as the Bafana Bafana legend looks to lead his charges to a positive result in his first match at the helm.

"I think right now, it is just early nerves but I think I've got a decent bunch of players who all still feel that they have a point to prove and that last season wasn't just a "once off" and I think the positive side I have is that the fact that most of them, or all of them are willing to play for me which is nice and flattering," McCarthy told Soccer Laduma.

"So hopefully tomorrow, it's not just all talk but they can buckle down and play according to their strengths and their abilities and surprise most people with their talent. I am just looking forward to see how these guys perform and how my first steps in to the coaching world will be," he added.

City will host Polokwane tomorrow, August, 12 with the match scheduled to get underway at 15h00.
