'Chiefs Need To Sign Defenders'

'Chiefs Need To Sign Defenders'

Despite Kaizer Chiefs having already signed two defenders and a goalkeeper-Rushwin Dortley, Bongani Sam and Fiacre Ntwari respectively—former Amakhosi captain and defender Patrick Mabedi believes the club still needs to bolster their defence.

In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, the Malawi national team head coach emphasized that a strong defence is crucial for winning trophies.

Mabedi pointed out that while having good attacking players is important, a solid defence is essential for keeping clean sheets and competing for silverware.

"If you look towards the end of last season their defence was not doing very well. They need to strengthen the defence because that is where everything starts. Even when you are attacking you need to have a solid defence. I am happy they have signed a national team goalkeeper from Rwanda who was playing at TS Galaxy but now they should have a strong central defensive pair," Mabedi told the Siya crew.

"I don't think Given Msimango and Thatayaone Dithlokwe have proven that they are good together and the new signing from Cape Town Spurs (Rushwin Dortley) can not do the job by himself. They have to sign defenders at least one or two more to strengthen that department. That's the weak point in my opinion," Mabedi observed.

Notably, Chiefs are also expected to sign Inacio Miguel from Petro which will further bolster their defensive line.

The former defender also stated that with the signing of Gaston Sirino, Chiefs need just one more experienced forward player, in addition to the defenders, to ensure they can compete for trophies this season.

"Ten seasons without a trophy is too long for a club like Kaizer Chiefs. They have signed well with Sirino and if they can add one experienced striker and at least two experienced defenders then they can go a long way in fighting for trophies this season. They can have a well-balanced squad to fight for and win something this season," Mabedi observed.

Kaizer Chiefs will open their 2024/25 season with an away Premiership encounter against Marumo Gallants in Bloemfontein in September.
