Kaizer Chiefs Last Won A Trophy Five Years Ago This Month

Five years ago this month, Kaizer Chiefs thumped four goals past Polokwane City to lift win the Absa Premiership title – it feels like an age ago…

Goals from George Lebese and Bernard Parker as well as a brace from Matthew Rusike sealed a 4-1 win over Polokwane on April 22 2015, a result that saw the Glamour Boys clinch the league title as it became mathematically impossible for them to be caught.

Now, almost five years on, that trophy is the last one that Amakhosi got their hands on, and they look like a very different team now as they look to try and end that drought with this season's league trophy.

Of the 11 players that started that win over Polokwane in 2015, just Bernard Parker, Willard Katsande and Erick Mathoho remain, with the other eight players – as well as head coach, Stuart Baxter – having moved on elsewhere.

On the bench that day, just George Maluleka (who will join Mamelodi Sundowns next season) and Kgotso Moleko remain at Naturena, meaning that 78% of the team that 18-man squad is no longer with them.

The Coronavirus outbreak has seen the 2019/20 season brought to an abrupt standstill with Chiefs four points clear at the top with eight games to go, but only time will tell if they will get the chance to equal Baxter's achievement five years ago.
