Banyana Banyana ran riot at the Wolfson Stadium after netting 17 goals past Comoros in their COSAFA Women's Cup opener on Wednesday afternoon.
Banyana blooded new individual in Tiisetso Makhubela, Bongeka Gamede and Kholosa Biyana and were ahead of 17 minutes after Makhubela pounced on a loose ball to drill in to the mid-corner. Ode Fulutudilu added a second on 20 minutes with a comfortable finish past Nastima Mohammed after moving around her marker. Banyana were handed a third two minutes later with an own-goal from Hanifa Ndahoma, who tried to clear a cross. It was four after two minutes when Mamello Makhabane tapped a loose ball home, as Mina Hassana made way for Fariza Ali in an injury enforced change for the visitors. Banyana looked for more on the half-hour mark, but Makhabane's shot cracked the crossbar as Jane played a one-two in to the area to make it five eight minutes later. However Desiree Ellis' charges didn't let up as Busisiwe Ndimeni burst in to the area to pick her spot 43 minutes in with a cool finish. After the break, Banyana made two changes with Fulutudilu and Lebohang Ramalepe sacrificed for Hilda Magaia and Noxolo Cesane respectively. Banyana continued their free-scoring mantra as Bambanani Mbane lashed home from close-range a minute in from poor defending. The battering raged on after 52 minutes with Jane on hand to tap home a rebound from a corner, with Ndimeni denied by the crossbar minutes later. Banyana were given a penalty on 62 minutes following a foul in the area, with Mbane finishing promptly albeit on the rebound, before Amanda Mthandi raced through on goal to find the net to bag the South Africans' 10th goal of the game. With 20 minutes to play, Banyana grabbed another with Magaia stationed inside the area to finish from point-blank range. Within a few minutes, it was Mthandi went on to grab her brace after tapping home from poor defending to make it twelve. Jane found space inside the area to find the bottom corner as the rout continued, before Magaia went on the seal her double with a close-range finish on 80 minutes. Banyana had their 15th of the match through a simple tap-in from Kholosa Biyana, while Mthandi secured her brace moments later. Jane secured her fourth of the day after tapping home a corner from poor defending to give Banyana a phenomenal start to the tournament.The win is not only the biggest in COSAFA Cup history, but also Banyana's biggest ever win.
