Why Pitso Criticised Baxter Over Fortune

Why Pitso Criticised Baxter Over Fortune

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has criticised national team coach Stuart Baxter for his attempts in trying to rope in Quinton Fortune as a third member of the Bafana Bafana technical team.

Though the ex-Manchester United player told Baxter he would not be available for the role earmarked for him during the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, Mosimane still strongly disagreed with plans to hire Fortune.

"That guy (Fortune) didn't want to play for Bafana because he wanted to go to America. You guys forget so quickly, now he must come and coach the national team? Why? He didn't want to play," Mosimane, speaking to journalists, said in his forthright manner.

"How patriotic are we? I don't have anything against Quinton. I think he made a success at United, he's a legend and I envy his CV. But on the coaching side I can talk. I don't think he deserves to be given a chance. Why? Are we giving him a chance because he played in England and he is decorated? No. There are good coaches. Don't you think Fadlu Davids (Orlando Pirates assistant coach) can do the job? He is a good coach. There are so many coaches you can support and help. And Gavin (Hunt, Bidvest Wits coach) can help Stuart also. When I was coach of Bafana I took Steve Komphela because I am not afraid of the names."

Baxter did emphasise recently that he wanted Fortune, who was capped 46 times for Bafana, to be a scout and give player support. He argued that it would have been belittling to offer the role to a PSL coach.

Mark Fish, another former national team player and a 1996 AFCON winner, is now being considered after Fortune said he would be unavailable.
