Quinton Fortune To Make Bafana Return

Quinton Fortune To Make Bafana Return

A day after Bafana Bafana learnt who their Africa Cup of Nations opposition would be, national team coach Stuart Baxter told the media that he would be bringing in an additional member to his technical team.

He has since revealed the person as Quinton Fortune.

The former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid player will not be unfamiliar in the role of the assistant coach, having previously worked alongside Baxter during the World Cup qualifiers several months ago, but it is believed he could not agree on terms with SAFA to come on board permanently.

As it stands, Baxter only has one assistant in Molefi Ntseki, the under-17 mentor who assumed the role at the start of the Englishman's tenure with Bafana away to Nigeria in an AFCON qualifier nearly two years ago.

Baxter had taken the decision not to retain the services of Owen da Gama, who was his predecessor's (Shakes Mashaba) second in command.

Speaking to the Siya crew, the coach confirmed his desire to have Fortune return to the national team fold: "Quinton knows how we work and he has been here before and I think he would be a great addition. I would want him to also be a bit of a scout during the AFCON, which is a double role that includes being an assistant coach as well. He is my preferred candidate."

SAFA still need to sign off the new addition, but Baxter does not envisage any stumbling blocks. Bafana face Ivory Coast, Namibia and Morocco in Group D at the AFCON this June.
