When Hugo Broos took over as Bafana Bafana head coach in 2021, he shook the national setup with a bold strategy — out with the old, in with the new. His youth-first approach opened the door for then-TS Galaxy midfielder Ethan Brooks, who burst onto the international scene with confidence and energy.
Brooks quickly became a regular in the national team, earning 11 appearances in quick succession, his composure in midfield belying his age. However, fast forward to 2024, and the now AmaZulu FC midfielder has been absent from the Bafana setup for three years.
Despite the drought, Brooks hasn’t lost sight of his goal — pulling on the green and gold again.
“I’m just working to get back,” Brooks told Soccer Laduma.
“I'm just trying to find that Ethan again, you know, the one who made a name for himself, who was enjoying the game and expressing himself.”
At 24, Brooks still has time on his side. His move to Durban has given him fresh surroundings and renewed motivation. Under the guidance of seasoned professionals like Bongani Zungu and Arthur Zwane, he’s growing, both as a player and as a person.
“It’s definitely an objective, a goal. Every South African footballer wants to represent their country — I’m no different. I just need to find the version of myself that loved playing, loved performing, and showed what I’m about.”
Brooks' admission is more than a soundbite. It’s a reflection of a player who’s had a taste of the highest level and is hungry for more. His form for Usuthu in the Betway Premiership has been steadily improving, and with Hugo Broos continuing to give youth a chance — as seen in his AFCON bronze-medal-winning side — a return might not be far off.
