UEFA Champions League
Result: Olympique Lyon 0-0 FC Barcelona
Date: 19 February 2019
Venue: Groupama Stadium
FC Barcelona did not have the best of nights in front of goal as they played to a goalless draw with Olympique Lyon in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
Luis Suarez returned to the Barca line up after starting the weekend's LaLiga encounter bench, with Kevin-Prince Boateng making way.
The host looked threatening in the opening exchanges and they could have been ahead inside ten minutes, with Moussa Dembele being denied by Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.
Soon after, Barca started to get into their stride and they could have gone ahead after 17 minutes when Lionel Messi sent a first-time strike just wide, while Ousmane Dembele had an effort saved minutes later.
The Catalan giants dominated for most of the first half, but they were often left down in the final third, particularly with Suarez, whose last away goal in the tournament came in 2015.
Memphis Depay had been quiet in the first stanza, but he nearly broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second half with a snap-shot that sailed inches wide.
In an attempt to change Barca's fortunes, Valverde threw on Philippe Coutinho for the in-effective Dembele after 67 minutes.
Anthony Lopes came to Barca's rescue with 14 minutes remaining with a superb save to keep out Coutinho's stinging effort from distance.
The Catalan giants threw everything forward in search of a winning goal in the remaining stages, but they were unable to find a way past the Lyon defence as the encounter ended goalless.
