UEFA Champions League Report: Manchester United v RB Leipzig 28 October 2020

Result: Manchester United v RB Leipzig

Date: 28 October 2020

Venue: Old Trafford

Marcus Rashford came off the bench and netted a hat-trick as Manchester United thrashed RB Leipzig 5-0 in the UEFA Champions League.

Donny van de Beek was handed a start in midfield alongside the returning Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic while Mason Greenwood partnered Anthony Martial in the attack.

The Red Devils looked lively in the early stages, with Pogba being deployed on the left side of the midfield diamond, which is said to be his preferred position.

United got the opening goal on 22 minutes when Pogba played in Greenwood, who found the far corner with a neat low finish on his first-ever start in the tournament.

The Bundesliga side did manage to carve out an opening soon after the first goal, but United goalkeeper David de Gea did well to keep out Christopher Nkunku's strike.

With no changes on either end, United looked more livelier in the second half but they were ultimately let down by their decision-making in the final third.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer then responded with a double change on the hour mark as Greenwood and Matic made way for Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay.

The video Assistant Referee came to United's rescue on 74 minutes after the assistant referee ruled out Rashford's strike for offside, but VAR overturned the decision to hand United a second goal.

It got better for United and Rashford three minutes as the striker skipped past Dayot Upamecano before rifling the ball beyond Péter Gulácsi for the third goal.

The hosts were awarded a penalty in the final three minutes following Marcel Sabitzer's foul on Martial, who stepped up and converted the spot-kick for his first goal of the season.

However, there was enough time for Rashford to complete his hat-trick with a powerful strike in second-half stoppage time after being teed up by Martial.
