Former PSG star Edinson Cavani was handed his first start for United in the tournament after his match-winning brace over the weekend while Anthony Martial also returned.

PSG were eager to get revenge for the last two defeats to the Red Devils, and they made their intensions clear early on as Neymar opened the scoring on six minutes with neat finish past David de Gea from a tight angle.

After a slow start, the home side were lucky not to have been a man down in the 21st minute when Fred was spotted head-butting Leandro Paredes but the Brazilian was only shown a yellow card.

The hosts then found the equaliser in the 32nd minute when Aaron Wan-Bissaka found Marcus Rashford, whose shot took a big deflection off Danilo and sailed into the back of the net.

With the first half ending all square, Martial should have put United four minutes after the break after being picked out by Rashford, but the Frenchman somehow blazed over from six yards with only Keylor Navas to beat.

The woodwork then came to PSG's rescue just before the hour-mark when Cavani's attempted lob beat Navas but crashed onto the woodwork while Martial was denied on the rebound.

United were made to rue those missed chances as PSG took the lead on 68 minutes as a scramble in the box lead to Marquinhos poking the ball beyond De Gea in the six-yard box.

It went from bad to worse two minutes later for the home side, who had Fred sent off after picking up his second yellow card of the game for a foul on Ander Herrera.

Second-half substitute Paul Pogba nearly made the perfect impact with 10 minutes remaining, but his first-time volley sailed just over the crossbar.

However, Neymar ended any hopes of a comeback in second-half stoppage time after turning home Mbappe's cross for his second goal on the night.
