UEFA Champions League Report: Manchester City v Olympique Lyon 19 September 2018

UEFA Champions League

Result: Manchester City 1-2 Olympique Lyon

Date: 19 September 2018

Venue: Etihad

Manchester City were left stunned in their UEFA Champions League opener as they lost 2-1 to Olympique Lyon at the Etihad.

The Citizens were without Pep Guardiola on the touchline, as the manager was in the stands after serving a ban.

The woodwork came to Lyon's rescue in the 17th minute as Jason Denayer, on loan from City, deflected Raheem Sterling's effort onto the crossbar.

Lyon had the ball in the back of the net after 23 minutes through Maxewel Cornet, but the striker's goal was ruled out for an offside in the build-up.

The Ligue 1 outfit were not to be denied three minutes later, when Cornet latched onto a cross from Nabil Fekir before firing into the bottom corner to put his side ahead.

The Etihad was stunned yet again before the break, with Lyon doubling their lead as Fekir registered a goal to go with his assist with an impressive finish after being picked out by Memphis Depay.

After struggling to find a goal in the opening stages of the second half, City introduced Sergio Aguero for the in-effective Gabriel Jesus in the 63rd minute.

City did pull a goal back minutes later, as Bernado Silva handed his side a life-line with a cool finish from close range after being picked out by Leroy Sane.

The Premier League champions threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, but Lyon remained solid at the back to claim three points.
