UEFA Champions League
Result: Liverpool 1-0 Napoli
Date: 11 December 2018
Venue: Anfield
Liverpool advanced to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 after defeating Napoli 1-0 thanks to Mohamed Salah's first-half strike.
Anything less than three points for Liverpool would see them finish third, while Napoli just needed to avoid defeat to advance to the last 16.
The game got off to lively start with both sides carving out chances in the opening 10 minutes, although Mohamed Salah and Marek Hamsik failed to capitlise.
The Reds had the ball in the back of the net after 21 minutes when Sadio Mane turned home Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross, however the Senegalese's effort was flagged offside.
The hosts eventually got the break through goal in the 34th minute as Salah did well to get past Koulibaly before slotting the ball through David Ospina's legs.
Napoli, meanwhile, were unable to carve out any chances in the remaining stages of the half as goalkeeper Alisson Becker enjoyed a quiet opening 45 minutes.
Salah should have doubled Liverpool's five minutes into the second half after being played in by Firmino, but the Egyptian failed to hit the target with only Ospina to beat.
The visitors upped the tempo towards the hour mark as they were desperate need of securing an equaliser to maintain their hopes of a last 16 spot.
Napoli should have levelled matters in the 78th minute when Lornezo Insigne's cross found Jose Callejon, who somehow fired over the crossbar at the far post.
Alisson ensured Liverpool walked away with the points as he produced a good save to deny Arkadiusz Milik from point-blank range as the Reds secured a 1-0 win.
Following Paris Saint-Germain's win over Red Star Belgrade, Jurgen Klopp's men finish as runners-up in the group while Napoli end the campaign in third.
