Result: Liverpool 0-2 Atalanta
Date: 25 November 2020
Venue: Anfield
Group D in the UEFA Champions League was blown wide open after Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat to Atalanta at Anfield on Wednesday evening.
Mohamed Salah was back in the line-up after recovering from the coronavirus while there were also starts for Neco Williams, Rhys Williams, Konstantinos Tsimikas and Divock Origi.
The visitors signalled their intent from the onset, with Robin Gosens and Alejandro Darío Gomez going close with strikes from distance inside the opening 10 minutes.
Even with Sadio Mane and Salah on the pitch, the Reds struggled to carve out any clear-cut chances in the early parts of the half as the Serie A side enjoyed a lion's share of the possession.
The Reds did get a rare sight at goal just before the break when the ball fell kindly to Salah in the box, but the Egyptian was unable to find the target.
The deadlock was eventually broken on 59 minutes as Gomez's delightful cross found Josip Ilicic, who slotted past Alisson Becker with a first-time finish in the six-yard box.
Atalanta doubled their lead four minutes later as another superb team move ended with Gosens side-footing the ball into the top corner from close range.
Having already introduced Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota before Atalanta's second goal, Klopp threw on Takumi Minamino for the final five in the hope pulling something back.
The Reds were unable to find a way past the Italian outfit's defence, as the encounter finished 2-0, with Atalanta moving level on points with second-place Ajax Amsterdam and one point behind Klopp's men.
