UEFA Champions League Report: Bayern Munich v Ajax Amsterdam 02 October 2018

Bayern Munich

UEFA Champions League

Result: Bayern Munich 1-1 Ajax Amsterdam

Date: 02 October 2018

Venue: Allianz Arena

Bayern Munich were left frustrated after they could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Ajax Amsterdam in the UEFA Champions League.

The Bavarians got off to the perfect start when Mats Hummels headed home Arjen Robben's cross to open the scoring after four minutes.   Bayern looked to add more goals after their fiery start, although the they struggled to carve out chances despite enjoying most of the possession.   It was Ajax who got the next goal as Mazaraoui played a neat one-two with Dusan Tadic before firing home a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.   The Dutch outfit nearly went ahead just before the halftime break, with Ziyech firing inches over the crossbar with a strike from 30-yards out.   Ajax continued to surprise the Bundesliga champions as they went close to taking the lead in the 60th minute when Tadic's cross found Ziyech, who headed wide of the upright.   Niko Kovac eventually opted for a change on 75 minutes as former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry replaced Franck Ribery as Bayern pushed for a winning goal.   Thomas Muller, who had been quiet by his standards, nearly put Bayern ahead on 88 minutes, but he headed over the crossbar from eight-yards out.   Both sides pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages, with Ajax going closest by hitting the upright in time added on, but 1-1 was how the score remained at the Allianz Arena.   Other Group E result:    AEK Athens 2 - 3 Benfica
