UEFA Champions League Report: Atletico Madrid v RB Leipzig 13 August 2020

RB Leipzig qualified for the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time in their history after defeating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Lisbon on Thursday night.

Diego Simeone recalled Jose Gimenez, Saul Niguez, Yannick Carrasco and Marcos Llorente, who was the hero in the second leg against Liverpool in the previous round.

The first half got off to a lively start, with Leipzig's Marcel Halstenberg heading over from close range on four minutes after the Atletico defence went to sleep.

Atletico went close with a chance of their own on 13 minutes through Carrasco, who looked to catch out Peter Gulacsi at his near post but the Leipzig shot-stopper produced a good save.

Leipzig looked the livelier of the two sides as the half went on, but they were let down by their decision-making in the final third after getting beyond the Atletico defences.

There was a chance for the Bundesliga just on the stroke of halftime when Christopher Nkunku sent a cross in for Dayot Upamecano, who sent his header straight at Jan Oblak.

The deadlock was eventually broken 10 minutes into the second stanza as Leipzig's January signing Daniel Olmo headed into the bottom corner after some neat build-up play.

Simeone responded by throwing on club-record signing Joao Felix for Hector Herrera for the final 30 minutes as they pushed for an equaliser. The substitution paid off for the Spaniards who were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute after a foul on Felix, who stepped up and converted from 12 yards to restore parity.

However, with the game seemingly headed for extra-time second-half substitute Tyler Adams was given space to unleash a strike that deflected off Stefan Savic and sailed past Oblak to secure a spot in the semi-finals for the Bundesliga outfit.
