Pep Guardiola has reacted to Manchester City's shock UEFA Champions League elimination against Olympique Lyon, who only finished seventh in Ligue 1.
The Spaniard failed to reach the semi-finals of the competition with City for a fourth season in a row, being knocked out at quarter-final stage for a third straight campaign while being sent home in last 16 in 2015/16.
The City coach, who was questioned for his line-up ahead of the tie, admitted his side were not good enough against the French opponents.
"It is what it is. One day we will break the gap to the semi-finals," Guardiola told BT Sport post-match.
"Second-half was okay, we were there, I had the feeling we were better, but you have to be perfect in this competition and we weren't.
"Sometimes you have to break this (barrier to the semis). The team over last few years deserves it. Maybe one day we'll break this gap."
A minute before Lyon's third strike, Raheem Sterling missed an open goal from a few yards out, while Ederson did not look good as City conceded the 3-1 on the other end and Guardiola confessed these crucial errors cost his side.
"We did a lot of good things, but it wasn't enough," he added.
"We made mistakes in the boxes in key moments. We struggled to find our spaces to attack."
The elimination by Lyon means Guardiola has failed to reach the Champions League final for a seventh successive season despite nearly spending €1 billion over the same period.
