Buffon, who turns 42 in January, took to the field for the 648th time in Serie A on Wednesday, when he helped the Bianconeri claim a 2-1 win over Sampdoria. In doing so, the 2006 FIFA World Cup winner equalled former AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini's record to become the league's joint-most-capped player of all time.

Buffon and Maldini are two of just four players who have breached the 600-appearance mark in Italy's top flight, with AS Roma legend Francesco Totti and former Inter Milan skipper Javier Zanetti sharing third spot after each making 618 appearances for their respective clubs.
The balance of the top 10 is made up of stars from yesteryear, and includes sixth-placed Dino Zoff, who famously won the 1968 UEFA European Championship and 1972 FIFA World Cup with Italy. The former Udinese, Juventus, Napoli and Mantova star was equally successful at club level, having made 565 appearances in Serie A.
