Italian Super Cup Report: Juventus v Lazio 22 December 2019

Result: Juventus 1-3 Lazio

Date: 22 December 2019

Venue: King Saud University Stadium

Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus were denied the first piece of silverware of the season after falling to a 3-1 defeat to Lazio in the Italian Super Cup on Sunday evening.

Bianconeri boss Maurizio Sarri made four alterations to the side that beat Sampdoria in Serie A in midweek, as goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny returned alongside Mattia De Sciglio, Rodrigo Bentancur and Blaise Matuidi.

Lazio were threatening in the early stages and eventually got the opener in the 16th minute courtesy of Luis Alberto, who fired a powerful strike into the roof of the net after Sergej Milinkovic-Savic delivered a square ball.

Juventus took time before they could get their rhythm, but Paulo Dybala levelled matters on the stroke of half-time with a close-range strike from a rebound after Lazio shot-stopper Thomas Strakosha  could only parry Cristiano Ronaldo's stinging effort.

With the game on the edge in the opening exchanges of the second stanza, Sarri made a tactical change ten minutes from the break, as attacker Juan Cuadrado came on for De Sciglio while  Aaron Ramsey replaced Gonzalo Higuain moments later.

The substitutions did not have positive impact in the game as Simone Inzaghi's men restored their lead in the 73rd minute thanks to Senad Lulic's strike at the back post from a flick-on by Marco Parolo.

Things got worse for the Bianconeri as Bentancur got his second booking in stoppage time for denying Parolo a clear goal-scoring opportunity and was dismissed.

Danilo Cataldi sealed the victory for Lazio from the resultant free-kick, after curling one into the top corner as Lazio were crowned Super Cup champions for 2019.
