Goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo were not enough to give Maurizio Sarri a winning start as Juventus suffered defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in a five-goal thriller.

Sarri went for the tried and tested formula, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Mario Mandzukic and Federico Bernadeschi leading the attack, while new signings Matthijs de Ligt, Adrien Rabiot and Merih Demiral started on the bench.

The first real opening fell to the Old Lady when Ronaldo was left in acres of space in the box, but his poor first touch allowed Toby Alderweireld to clear away.

The deadlock was eventually broken on 30 minutes as a counter attack led by Heung-min Son and Parrott ended with Erik Lamela tapping past Gianluigi Buffon.

The Serie A champions enjoyed a lot of the possession for the remainder of the half, but they were unable to turn that dominance in to goals as they went in to the halftime break trailing.

Both managers opted make a plethora of changes at the start of the second half, but it was a Juve substitute who made the impact as Higuain levelled matters on 56 minute with neat finish past Paulo Gazzaniga.

Four minutes later, the turnaround was complete for Sarri's troops as Mattia De Sciglio raced to byline before cutting the ball back for Ronaldo, who smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

Juventus' joy was short-lived though as Spurs were level in the 65th minute, with new signing Tanguy Ndombele picking out Lucas Moura with a reverse pass before the Brazilian the ball beyond Szczesny.

With the game seemingly headed for a draw, Spurs snatched the winning goal in second-half stoppage time through Harry Kane, who found the back of the net with a clever strike from the halfway line.
