LaLiga Report: Real Madrid vs Cadiz 17 October 2020

Result: Real Madrid 0-1 Cadiz

Date: 17 October 2020

Venue: Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium

Newly-promoted Cadiz handed LaLiga champions Real Madrid their first defeat of the campaign on Saturday evening.

Real survived a scare in the opening few minutes. Toni Kroos was caught on the ball after taking too long to clear Alex Fernandez's cross into the box from the right and Alvaro Negredo ran onto it. He took the shot on the turn and beat Thibault Courtois, but Sergio Ramos was covering and made the clearance on the line.

Cadiz came close again in the eighth minute. Lucas Vazquez played a sloppy pass into midfield which Negredo collected and he picked out Lozano with a brilliant throughball, with the Honduran taking the shot first time on the edge of the box, but Courtois punched it away.

Los Blancos had their first opportunity of the encounter in the 12th minute. Vazquez pulled away from his defender as he cuts inside from the right and found space to shoot just outside the box. He tried to curl his shot into the top-right corner, but his effort sailed just over the bar.

Soon after, Juan Cala picked up the ball in midfield and the Madrid defenders were no hurry to close him down as he made a driving run to the edge of the box before drilling a low shot to the bottom corner that Courtois got down quickly to push away.

And the visitors were rewarded for their early dominance when they took the lead in the 16th minute. The Madrid defenders didn't pick up Lozano's run until it was too late and he chipped his shot over Courtois.

Real centre-back Raphael Varane rose highest in the 38th minute to meet Kroos' corner but his header went inches wide.

It was a cagey opening to the second half with the first goalmouth opportunity coming in the 68th minute. Kroos was given a lot of space on the left wing and he whipped a great cross into the middle of the box. Jeremias Ledesma rushed off his line but missed it and Vinicius got his head to it but sent his effort wide of the far post.

With ten minutes to go, Karim Benzema was picked out on the edge of the box and he did well to get a shot away as he had three Cadiz defenders ahead of him but his shot flew over Ledesma's outstretched hand and bounced back off the crossbar.
