Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Lionel Messi UEFA Champions League Record

Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Lionel Messi UEFA Champions League Record

With his late strike in the second leg, Cristiano Ronaldo was Real Madrid's hero in their 4-3 aggregate win over Juventus, and he broke another record held by longstanding rival Lionel Messi in the process.

In a game filled with drama, the biggest talking point came in the third minute of injury time after Mehdi Benatia fouled Lucas Vazquez inside the box.

Despite heavy protests, referee Michael Oliver awarded a penalty, and Ronaldo stepped up to score in the 97th minute. The much-celebrated goal prevented the game from going to extra-time after Juventus had almost completed a heroic comeback.

Ronaldo's strike was his 15th in the UEFA Champions League this season, and also extended his competition record of scoring in 11 successive games.

In addition, the strike was also his 10th goal against Juventus, breaking Messi's record for most Champions League goals against a single opponent.

The Argentine set the record after scoring his ninth goal against Arsenal back in March 2016, and Ronaldo matched the milestone with his brace in the first leg at Juventus.

However, the last-minute strike on Wednesday saw Ronaldo surpass his longstanding rival's record as he once again wrote his name into the competition's history books.
