Busquets To Leave Barca? Xavi Responds

Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez has addressed the news that legendary midfielder Sergio Busquets is preparing to leave the club at the end of the season.

Busquets 'Annoyed' With Criticism, Plans To Leave Barca?

Since being introduced to the Catalan giants' first team in 2008 under Pep Guardiola, Busquets has gained a reputation for being one of best deep-lying playmakers of the past 20 years.

Having made 690 appearances for Barca, the 34-year-old holds a status at the Camp Nou that not many do, although he has been subjected to strong criticism from supporters following his recent performances.

His displays seem to have led to more discussions surrounding his future this week, with it being suggested that the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner could let his contract run down instead of signing a new deal at his boyhood club.

Speaking in a recent press conference, Xavi noted that the team cannot easily replace Busquets, but added that he will leave the decision down to the player.

"Yes, he ends his contract next year but we are only in October, we will see what happens this season, if he's happy, it's a personal decision," he said, according to Barca Blaugranes

"I had an offer to extend my contract in my last year and I decided to leave. But we don't have a natural replacement in his position."

Touching on the criticism aimed at Busquets in recent weeks, Xavi insisted that the Barcelona captain remains incredibly key for the LaLiga giants.

"When we lose, all of us are criticised. It is possible that Busquets rests in some games because he is not going to play every match and that is normal, but that does not mean that he is not important," he added.

"He is very important for us. Both Busquets and the captains. There is a very good atmosphere in the dressing room. We have a very healthy dressing room and that makes us think that things are going to end well this season."

Barca take on Villarreal in the league on Thursday night at the Camp Nou, where a win would take them within three points of table-toppers Real Madrid.
