Marcus Rashford, who was benched for disciplinary reasons, came on to score the winner as Manchester United defeated Wolverhampton Wanders on Saturday afternoon.

Premier League

Result: Wolves 0-1 Manchester United

Date: 31 December 2022

Venue:  Molineux Stadium

Erik ten Hag made just one change from the win over Nottingham Forest, as Marcus Rashford was dropped to the bench due to disciplinary reasons as Alejandro Garnacho was given a start.

Casemiro went close to adding breaking the deadlock after five minutes after getting on the end of Christian Eriksen's corner, but his header was deflected just over the crossbar.

United were nearly gifted the opening goal on 19 minutes when Garnacho pounced on Nelson Semedo's poor back pass, but the young Argentine was brilliantly denied by goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Wolves managed to carve out a chance on the break with 26 minutes played, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka produced a superb block to deny Joao Moutinho a certain strike at goal.

The sides would head into the break goalless after Martial failed to get on the end of Garnacho's cross from six yards out.

Both teams made a change at the start of the second half, as United threw on Rashford for Garnacho while Wolves introduced Adama Traore for Diego Costa.

United goalkeeper David de Gea was called into action just before the hour mark, with the Spaniard producing a great save to keep out Ruben Neves' free-kick.

The Red Devils eventually got their reward with 14 minutes left on the clock as Rashford combined with Fernandes before firing past Jose Sa with a powerful finish.

Rashford had the ball in the back of the net once again in the 83rd minute after collecting a pass from Wan-Bissaka, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for a handball by the striker.

Wolves threw bodies forward in search of a winning goal but the Red Devils held out until the final whistle as De Gea produced a superb save to keep out Raul Jiminez's header as United climbed into the top four.
