Date: 05 November 2023
Venue: Kenilworth Road
Diaz was back in the squad for the first time since his parents kidnapping but he was only named on the bench, while Joe Gomez came in at left-back as Jurgen Klopp's only change from the win over Nottingham Forest. The Reds should have broken the deadock on 12 minutes when Trent Alexander-Arnold did well to pick out the run of Darwin Nunez, who took one touch before rattling the crossbar from close-range.
The visitors continued to dominate as they went in search of an opener, with Nunez and Mohamed Salah squandering big chances in the box while the hosts did look lively on the counter attack at times.
With Liverpool finding it tough to get the breakthrough, Luton did get stronger as the half went on, much to the delight of the home crowd who made their feelings clear to the players.
After failing to find a way past Alisson Becker, the home side have now failed to score to a first-half goal in ten of their 11 league games this campaign.
Luton did go close to breaking the deadlock after the hour mark when Chiedozie Ogbene did well to skip past two Liverpool defenders before seeing his strike saved by Alisson, who also kept out the rebound.
Frustration began to grow for the visitors when Salah headed Alexander-Arnold's cross into the path of Darwin, who somehow sent his effort over the crossbar with only goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski to beat.
The hosts were made to rue those missed chances with ten minutes left on the clock, as Luton took the lead via a swift counter-attack that ended with substitute Tahith Chong turning home Issa Kaboré's cross.
However, Liverpool did manage to back on level terms in the fifth minute of time added on when Diaz marked his return to the side with a towering header from Harvey Elliot's cross.
