Result: Liverpool 3-1 Burnley
Date: 10 February 2024
Venue: Anfield
The Reds made five changes to the side that lost against Arsenal, as goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, Andrew Robertson, Darwin Nunez, Wataru Endo and Jarell Quansah were all brought in.
South African striker Lyle Foster, meanwhile, was not available for Burnley due to injury.
The Clarets had a bright start after David Fofana came close to giving them the lead with only seven minutes on the clock after his long range shot came off the crossbar.
Vincent Kompany's charges continued to create chances but they could not take them and were punished on the half-hour mark after Diogo Jota broke the deadlock for Liverpool with a header from Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner.
Jurgen Klopp's troops gained control of the game after that but they were too comfortable as Dara O'Shea levelled matters for Burnley on the stroke of half-time with a header from a corner.
The Reds had a perfect start in the second stanza as Luis Diaz restored their lead seven minutes from the interval with a bouncing header from Robertson' corner.
Burnley were a big threat on counter-attacks as Fofana had two big chances after the hour-mark, one-on-one with Kelleher but could not find the back of the net.
The hosts increased their intensity going forward and Nunez eventually gave them a two-goal cushion in the last ten minutes with a close-range header after a cross by Harvey Elliott.
Klopp brought on Cody Gakpo moments later in place of Diaz for fresh legs but it was Nunez who came close to making it 4-1 in the dying minutes but was denied by James Trafford in a one-on-one.
Liverpool restored their two-point lead at the top of the log, although they have played one more game than second-placed Manchester City.
The Clarets remained in the relegation zone.
