The Reds boast one of the most famous academies in Europe, having produced the likes of Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Trent Alexander-Arnold in recent years.

Not all who graduate make the grade, however, as is perhaps best illustrated in the case of the club's youngest-ever player, Jerome Sinclair. The Birmingham-born striker made his senior debut at the age of 16 years and six days back in 2012, but, after struggling for game time and falling out with the club, left after making just five appearances.
Jordan Rossiter, who was once labelled "the next Gerrard", made his senior bow at the age of 17 but was never able to show his quality after suffering a spate of injuries. The former England youth international has since teamed up with Gerrard at Rangers, but continues to be plagued by injury concerns.

A number of non-English players have also failed to live up to the hype over the years, including three Spaniards signed between 2005 and 2012. Antonio Barragan, Suso and Dani Pacheco were all expected to be "the next big thing", but only managed a combined 39 appearances between them before forging their careers elsewhere.
