DFB-Pokal Report: Schalke vs Bayern Munich 03 March 2020

Result: Schalke 0-1 Bayern Munich

Date: 03 March 2020

Venue:  VELTINS-Arena

Bayern Munich kept their defence of the DFB-Pokal title alive with a 1-0 win over Schalke to advance to the semi-finals on Tuesday evening.

Leon Goretzka and Corentin Tolisso returned for the visiting side, who hammered Hoffenheim over the weekend while Schalke were looking to end their four-game winless run in all competitions.

Schalke went close from the breakthrough inside the first 12 minutes when Guido Burgstaller cracked the crossbar after meeting a cross off a quick break-attack.

Bayern's first meaningful threat saw Benjamin Pavard trying his luck from 20 -yards out with a long-range drive at the midway stage, which Schalke goalkeeper Markus Schubert pushed to safety.

For all their earlier endeavour, Schalke were behind five minutes to halftime with a half-volley from Joshua Kimmich on the edge of the six-yard area following a poor defensive clearance.

David Wagner's outfit attempted a strong response following the start of the second half, with a timeous intervention from Tolisso thwarting Rabbi Matondo in a promising situation.

Bayern were back on the charge after the 62nd minute and had Phillipe Coutinho rattling the crossbar after opening space to get the effort away.

Wagner turned focus to the dugout three minutes later and called on Benito Raman, who replaced Nassim Boujellab. Raman should've drawn his side level seconds from making an entry as he mistimed a golden opportunity from Matondo's perfectly-placed set up.

In similar circumstances, Goretzka failed to give Bayern a second under the final 20 minutes with a wayward header from a corner with the goal gaping.

The Bavarians looked for a strong finish whilst the hosts searched for an equaliser in the remaining minutes, but victory went to the holders who progressed to the last eight.
