Result: Schalke 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen
Date: 14 June 2020
Venue: VELTINS-Arena
Bayer Leverkusen moved into the UEFA Champions League places after securing a point at struggling Schalke in the Bundesliga on Sunday night.
Schalke came into the encounter winless in their last 12 league encounters while Leverkuen were hoping to bounce back from a 3-0 mauling at the hand Bayern Munich last weekend.
The hosts looked lively in the early stages of the first half, with Amhed Kutucu and Weston McKennie going close with efforts from distance in the opening 10 minutes.
Leverkusen, meanwhile, had to wait until the 23rd minute for a clear opening as Lucas Alario saw his close-range header blocked while Sven Bender headed wide a minute later.
After missing the loss against Bayern, Kai Havertz was back on the pitch nearly found the opener before the break but his header was brilliantly saved by Alexander Nubel.
Schalke were then awarded a penalty six minutes after the break after a handball on Edmond Tapsoba, which allowed Daniel Caligiuri to slot home the opening goal.
Leverkusen threw on a change for the final 20 minutes as Kevin Volland replaced Kai Hevertz, and the change nearly paid off after Volland saw his shot saved by Nubel.
However, the home side were denied their first win in 12 games after defender Juan Miranda deflected the ball into his own net with nine minutes remaining.
As a result, Schalke have now gone 13 games without a win in the Bundesliga while Leverkusen moved into the top four with the point.
