Borussia Dortmund moved to within one point of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich after defeating local rivals Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1on Saturday evening.
Dortmund made only one change with Erling Haaland getting a start ahead of Jadon Sancho while Gladbach had two alterations, with Christoph Kramer and Alassane Plea both recalled.
The visitors had a bright start after Thorgan Hazard fired them ahead in only the eighth minute of the match with a quick finish inside the box after receiving a through ball from Haaland.
Marco Rose's charges were fired up to come back to the game and Ramy Bensebaini came very close to levelling matters in the 22nd minute with a strike that missed wide of the near post from Plea's through ball.
The hosts gained momentum in the closing phase of the first stanza as Plea also came close to equalising with five minutes but his powerful striker was kept out by Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki.
Gladbach had a perfect start in the second stanza, as Lars Stindl levelled matters five minutes inside the second stanza with a close range finish from Plea's cross.
Dortmund came close to restoring their lead in the 65th minute after Hazard received a cross inside the six-yard but his shot was kept out by Gladbach shot-stopper Yann Sommer.
Achraf Hakimi eventually restored the lead for Lucien Favre's men with 19 minutes remaining after drilling home a strike from close range following a through ball by second-half substitute Sancho.
Sancho came very close to adding a third goal for Dortmund in the last 11 minutes with a cushioned strike that cannoned off the post.
Haaland had a glorious chance to deliver a sucker punch in the last four minutes for Dortmund after latching onto a good pass in sight of goal inside the box but he struck his shot over the bar as the encounter finished 2-1, with the visitors moving up to second spot.
