Robert Lewandowski broke a long-standing Bundesliga record after finding the back of the net in Bayern Munich's 4-0 thrashing of Wolfsburg on Friday night.
Bundesliga
Result: Bayern Munich 4-0 Wolfsburg
Date: 17 December 2021
Venue: Allianz Arena
There were just two new faces for Bayern from their 5-0 win over VfB Stuttgart two days ago, as Dayot Upamecano and Leroy Sane were afforded starting berths.
The intent from the hosts were clear with seven minutes played after Thomas Muller tapped in a rebound from close-range after goalkeeper Koen Casteels spilled Serge Gnabry's shot.
Wolfsburg could've been level a minute later through Wout Weghorst from clever bit of play, but the towering presence of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer prevented the forward.
Although the opportunities continued to follow Bayern 27 minutes in as Robert Lewandowski nodded a cutback from Muller on target only for Casteels to save from close-range.
Wolfsburg finished the first half positively though and should've been back on level terms from a smart volley by Weghorst off a ball by Maximilian Arnold, but Neuer collected.
From a short corner-kick, the Bavarians snatched a second goal 12 minutes in the second half when Upamecano waited patiently at the back-post to head in Muller's cutback.
It was two in two minutes for the Bavarians this after Sane cut inside following a pass by Gnabry and applied a curling finish past Casteels from the edge of the area.
Bayern were very close to a fourth following the closing stages through Lewandowski, but he drilled wide after he entered into a pass from Jamal Musiala.
The Bavarians were rewarded for their persistent play with three minutes to go as Musiala set-up Lewandowski again to see the Pole bag the net this time around, making it 43 goals Bundesliga goals in 2021 - which is a new league record.
