Borussia Dortmund were denied the chance to move level on points with the Bundesliga after a 4-3 loss to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday night.
Dortmund were without the services of talisman Marco Reus, who is set to miss the next four weeks with injury, although January signing Emre Can was handed a start in midfield.
The visitors were looking to bounce back from the midweek shock exit in the DFB Pokal, but they did not get off to the best start after Kevin Volland put Leverkusen ahead on 20 minutes with a neat volley.
The joy was short-lived though as Dortmund were back on level terms two minutes later when defender Mats Hummels nodded home Jadon Sancho's corner.
The turnaround was complete for the away side 11 minutes later as Can marked his first start for the club with a superb curling finish from distance.
The turbles turned once again as Volland completed his brace to bring Leverkusen level just two minutes before the halftime break.
Dortmund had the ball in the back of the net eight minutes after the break though Jadon Sancho, but the strike was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee.
The visitors were not to be denied after the hour mark as Raphael Guerreiro put his side back in front with a neat finish into the bottom corner.
Leverkusen responded with a change for the final 20 minutes as Moussa Diaby made way for Leon Bailey as the home side went in search of an equaliser.
The change paid off as the home side drew level through Bailey's strike in the 81st minute, just minutes before the substitute had a goal disallowed for offside.
Leverkusen then went ahead with eight minutes left in the contest as Lars Bender nodded home a cross from Daley Sinkgraven to seal three points for the home side, who move up to fifth spot.
