After Flemming Row, Wydad 'Appoint' New SD For Rulani

Rulani Mokwena is set to work alongside a new sporting director at Wydad Athletic Club

After a rumoured fallout with Mamelodi Sundowns sporting director Flemming Berg, Rulani Mokwena is now reportedly on the verge of working alongside a new one at Wydad Athletic Club.

Results have not been going the Johannesburg native’s way in recent weeks. Wydad have drawn their last four matches in the Botola Pro Inwi, relinquishing second place — the final CAF Champions League qualification spot — and this past weekend, they were eliminated from the Moroccan Throne Cup after a 1-0 defeat to Moghreb Tetouan.

Winning the domestic cup was allegedly one of Mokwena’s targets, with the other being successful qualification for the Champions League. However, following their cup exit, tremendous pressure has now been placed on the South African tactician to secure a top-two league finish.

In a bid to boost their chances of returning to Africa’s premier club competition, Le Site Info Sport reports that Wydad have decided to appoint Mohamed Amine Benhachem as the club’s new sporting director.

Benhachem left his role as head coach of RCA Zemamra last month and is set to return to Wydad, having previously served as assistant to Sven Vandenbroeck as recently as 2023. The same report claims that Mokwena did not oppose the appointment of the Moroccan tactician, with the 49-year-old expected to join first-team training as soon as possible.

It was alleged that a breakdown in Mokwena’s relationship with Berg contributed to his departure from Chloorkop, but Wydad will be hoping that their appointment of Benhachem proves fruitful rather than detrimental to the club’s ambitions.
