Nigeria Boss Breaks Silence On Resignation Talks

Nigeria head coach Austin Eguavoen has set the record straight on his rumoured resignation.

Nigeria's interim head coach has broken his silence after news emerged suggesting that he stepped down from his role after only two matches in charge.

A few days before the Super Eagles were set to commence their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, the west Africans announced that Bruno Labbadia would be their new head coach.

That appointment, however, fell through at the last minute, and Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) technical director Austin Eguavoen was chosen to take the reins of the three-time African champions, on an interim basis, for their AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda.

Eguavoen managed to lead his charges to a 3-0 victory over Gernot Rohr's side last weekend, but after being held to a goalless draw by the Wasps this week, it was reported that the temporary boss had decided to step down after returning from Kigali.

The former defender, however, has now set the record straight following their return from their final qualifier for this international break.

"It's quite unfortunate that people just trigger something that is not correct. And the situation we are in now, we don't need negative stories," Eguavoen said upon his arrival in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, as per Punch.

"I only talked about sitting down with the hierarchy of the federation after these two games and we will see how to go about prosecuting the next games.

"But when I saw that story, I was worried. Whatever people are reading out there aren't correct. I'm still very much in charge. I'm the Technical Director of the NFF, saddled with the responsibility of taking the Super Eagles at this moment."
