Taking to X (formerly Twitter) this week, ex-Nigeria and Enyimba FC goalkeeper Idah Peterside, who retired from professional football in 2002, revealed his past struggles.

Shortly after hanging up his boots, Peterside began a career in punditry, working with SuperSport, and also opened up his own evangelic church.

Now a pastor in South Africa, the 50-year-old explained how his wife leaving him following the end of his playing days saw him fall into a painful state, during which he considered committing suicide.

"I almost killed myself after my ex-wife left me, the shame was too much. I had just started a church and was just starting on SuperSport," Peterside wrote on X, according to Soccernet.ng.

"Only God saw me through. I look back today and am very grateful to God."
