The former player was reported dead after he had fallen from an 11 storey building in China. He was playing for Zhejiang FC in the Chinese Super League.

Just a week after his death, the player's family released a statement announcing his death and the details of his funeral.

The distressing nature of his death led to speculation as to what could have caused it.

According to Foot Africa, the Chinese police investigated the matter and revealed there was no violence involved in his death.

"Following the on-site investigation, supported by the analysis of surveillance cameras and other evidence, investigators established that Boupendza had fallen from the balcony of his apartment," the police said. "No signs of violence or external intervention were found. The criminal hypothesis has therefore been formally ruled out."

Foot Africa report that Boupendza's death was by suicide and it was claimed that the player had been suffering with his mental health.
