In all of Europe’s top sides, there is massive competition for starting spots, meaning that some quality players have had to bide their time on the bench.
The Fan Park brings you a few players who we believe are the best benchwarmers.
Petr Cech – Chelsea
The goalkeeper has played second-fiddle to Thibaut Courtois for most of the season, when he could easily been playing regularly for one of Europe’s top teams. At 33-years-old, the Czech Republican has plenty of years ahead of himself as a player, and Cech may be on his way out to seek first team football.
Angel Di Maria – Manchester United
The Argentine made a lively start to life at the Red Devils, but after a few sub-standard performances, Di Maria was dropped to the bench by Louis van Gaal. After his big-money move to the club, and undeniable talent, the bench is the last place you’d expect to see the winger start a game.
Pedro – Barcelona
The Spanish winger has found life tough this season at Barcelona, as he’s been overlooked by Luis Enrique for the likes of Luis Suarez and Neymar – understandably. However, just because he’s spent most of the season on the sidelines, it doesn’t mean that he’s lost his spark. I hope that Pedro leaves at the end of the season, as a player of his quality deserves more game-time.
Fábio Coentrão – Real Madrid
Carlo Ancelotti has been tough on his Portuguese left-back this season, even criticising the way in which he trains, but could it just be a lack of motivation? I think so. Coentrão’s lack of playing-time has probably resulted in a dip of confidence, which naturally results in poor work ethic. I still feel that the player has tremendous quality, and should play more!
Which other players on the bench do you feel should play more?
