NEW: Balotelli's Next Club Decided?

Mario Balotelli is reportedly close to signing for Serie A outfit Genoa.

Ex-Manchester City and Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli is reportedly nearing a return to Europe's top five leagues, with the club he is expected to join having been revealed.

Earlier this month, reports suggested that the 34-year-old was in talks over a potential return to Serie A.

The striker, who is currently a free agent after leaving Adana Demirspor in July, last played in Italy between December 2020 and July 2021 while on the books of AC Monza.

According to journalist Nicolo Schira, Balotelli is "getting closer" to joining Genoa, who were believed to be the club looking into the possibility of pursuing his signature a week and a half ago.

The 36-time Italy international is expected to pen a short-term deal with the Italian outfit, with club chiefs reportedly pushing to sign him immediately.

The player, meanwhile, is said to have given the green light to the potential move, and is now waiting for Genoa CEO Andres Blazquez to approve the deal.

Somewhat of a journeyman, Balotelli has represented 11 different clubs in his career so far, but made the most appearances (86) for Inter Milan between 2007 and 2010.

The talented forward, who is often accused of failing to live up to his potential, also played for top sides such as AC Milan, City and Liverpool, although his best scoring form came during his time at Nice.

Balotelli netted 43 times in 76 matches for the French club between 2016 and 2019, before a fallout with manager Patrick Vieira, who had not been at Nice for long prior to their disagreement.
