Nigeria Star Backed To Win CAF POTY

With Victor Osimhen the reigning CAF Men's Player of the Year, another Nigerian attacker has been backed to win the 2024 edition of Africa's most coveted individual prize.

Prior to the Lagos native winning the illustrious award last year, it had been 24 years since a Super Eagle was crowned Africa's best player.

The winner in 1999 was Nigeria legend Nwankwo Kanu, who claimed the accolade while playing for Arsenal, but it now seems Nigeria could have back-to-back winners of the honour for the first time since Kanu and Victor Ikpeba won it in 1996 and 1997.

Many feel Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman should be the 2024 winner following his performances for his club Atalanta and the national side.

During the 2023/24 season, the London-born winger scored 17 goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions for La Dea, and helped the Italian club win the UEFA Europa League by scoring a hat-trick in the final, becoming the first player to score three goals in a major European cup final in 49 years in the process.

One of the people backing him to win the award is another former winner in ex-Barcelona man Emmanuel Amunike.

Amunike, who won the award in 1994 while playing for Sporting CP, has insisted Lookman has done enough in the early stages of the 2024/25 season to consolidate his claim to win the honour.

"He's in line [to be crowned CAF Men's Player of the Year winner] if he continues the way he is doing," Amunike told SportsBoom.

"I watched the last game against Rwanda, and his performance was outstanding. It shows that he has been able to consolidate himself with African football."
