Both the Argentine and the Frenchman produced iconic moments in their playing careers, having played at the highest level for the world's biggest clubs for the majority of their tenures within professional football.
Recently, Messi made more history in his career when he won his record eighth Golden Ball, 25 years on from Zidane's sole Ballon d'Or triumph.
However that is not the only rare achievement the two icons share, with both having also had the honour of scoring in a UEFA Champions League final, as well as a brace in a FIFA World Cup final.
Earlier this week, Zidane travelled to Miami for a discussion with Messi for adidas, and when quizzed about which occasion elicited the most joy when scoring, the former Real Madrid and Barcelona superstars agreed that there was no better feeling than scoring in the final of the global showpiece.
"It is always special to score both in European competitions as well as in the World Cup, but obviously, scoring in a World Cup is always more special due to the context, for what it means," Messi said to Zidane, as per Goal.
"But, well, it depends on the match. Maybe it's your moment to score a goal in the Champions League final."
Zidane interjected: "I can also answer that for you, Leo, because you have done that recently with Argentina, in the final."

Messi responded: "That one, obviously. That goal was the best... Yes, scoring a goal in the World Cup final I think is the best thing ever, right? Both of us can say that."
"That's right," Zidane agreed. "There is nothing [better]."
