Ghana Off To Winning Start Under New Coach

Ghana Off To Winning Start Under New Coach

Group E

Ghana 1-0 Angola

Ghana gave new coach Chris Hughton a winning start in a 1-0 victory over Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium and left the host sitting pretty at the top of Group E.

A scrappy finish at the cusp of full-time by Antoine Semenyo handed the Black Stars the maximum points and also their second win in the group.

The Black Stars are now comfortably top the group and lie a further three points away from the Palancas Negras, who languish second.

Madagascar 0-3 Central African Republic

Madagascar, who were quarter-finalist in their maiden edition in 2019, remained without a win after three matches in Group E following a 3-0 defeat to the Central Africa Republic.

The visitors wasted little time to set their intentions clear and were ahead through Isaac Ngoma before Louis Mafouta doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime.

Central African Republic didn't let up as the second half commenced and bagged a third in the latter exchanges courtesy of Mafouta, who completed his brace to hand his side their first win in the group.

Group H

Zambia 3-1 Lesotho

Zambia remained at the top of Group H in their qualifying campaign after recording a 3-1 victory over Lesotho at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.

Lesotho were well structured in the opening minutes and took the lead a few minutes to halftime through former Black Leopards and Swallows FC player Tshwarelo Bereng.

That lead didn't last long as Chipolopolo were back on level terms when a delivery from Emmanuel Banda picked out Fashion Sankala who didn't need a second invitation.

Chipolopolo increased their advantage minutes from the break off a well-taken finish by Lameck Banda from Kings Kangwa's cleverly worked assist.

The host helped themselves to a third a few seconds apart where Banda once more popped up in an advanced area to slot home and evidently steer his nation to victory.

Group I

Congo 1-2 South Sudan

Congo stumbled to a shock 2-1 defeat to a ten-men South Sudan and saw the latter leapfrog them into second spot on the table in Group G.

The travelling outfit were quick out of the blocks and nabbed the breakthrough following a Chol Peter Bentiu Daniel's finish in the middle of the second stanza.

South Sudan were reduced to ten players as Peter Maker committed an indiscretion and was send packing by the man in the middle following a second yellow card.

However, the Eagles seemed to have salvaged a point with a last-minute spot-kick from Thievy only for Tito Okello to get the visitors out of sight and secured the winner to confirm the maximum points.
