Mourinho Aims 'Jealous' Dig At Former Side

Jose Mourinho

Following AS Roma's victory this past weekend, Jose Mourinho seemed jealous of his former side Chelsea's spending power following their €100 million (R1.8 billion) outlay on Mykhaylo Mudryk.

The Portuguese tactician was once the benefactor of the billions at the west Londoners' disposal as he led the Blues to multiple Premier League titles during his two spells at Stamford Bridge. The 59-year-old helped Chelsea gain credibility in world football as previous club owner Roman Abramovich's immense wealth helped the English giants win eight trophies.

That is no longer the reality for the two-time UEFA Champions League winner as he is now only able to utilise a limited budget with Serie A giants Roma.

Following his side's 2-0 win over Fiorentina on Sunday, Mourinho admitted that the Giallorossi do not have the financial muscle to compete with the likes of Chelsea as he had to use Marash Kumbulla as cover for the suspended Roger Ibanez.

"In order to get that quality, we must get the young players to grow," Mourinho said after the game, as per DAZN.

"[Benjamin] Tahirovic has this quality. We need a defender who can pass the ball better out of defence and Kumbulla is probably the one who does it best, but we need Ibanez because of his pace and determination.

"We need to find a solution, we can't just buy Mudryk for €100 million!"

While Mourinho's former club has been busy in the transfer market, the former FC Porto man admitted there would be limited activity from Roma this January.

"I am not expecting anyone to arrive," he added.

"The director (Tiago Pinto) was very honest and direct, he said things in an interview that a coach usually doesn't like to hear.

"Coaches always want to hear we have lots of money, can buy option A, B, C, D, build an incredible team. That is the dream.

"I worked at clubs with those sorts of practically limitless funds. There are more and more clubs nowadays who fit that profile, but it's not our profile. We work, we give our all, we work with the characteristics we've got."
