Kaizer Chiefs' recent years have been a rollercoaster ride, plunging from trophy-laden peaks under former coach Stuart Baxter to frustrating dips in form in the last nine years. This decline has sparked fierce debate and reflection within the Amakhosi faithful. Coaching changes, a barren spell for the trophy cupboard and disciplinary woes have troubled the club in Soweto.

The current season alone saw the club part ways with Molefi Ntseki, leading to Cavin Johnson's interim reign. Joining the chorus of critics, Namibian legend Mohammed Ouseb questioned the wisdom of the last two appointments.
“There are no two things about it. For me, the last two coaches we had Arthur (Zwane) and Molefi (Ntseki)… I don’t understand why they had to appoint Arthur Zwane because for me straight from the development with no experience, Chiefs are a big brand, why didn’t they bring in coaches that have won cups and are respected by players?” Ouseb asked GameON on Radio 2000.
‘Yes, he is part of the team, had been there and was in the first team but was he the right person? I don’t think so.
“The same with Molefi, I believe and heard they are great guys but at the end of the day what did they achieve before for you to bring them in, to come coach Chiefs?”
For Ouseb, the answer lies in emulating Mamelodi Sundowns' two-pronged approach: ruthless investment and meticulous youth development.
“Sundowns – we all know they are always getting the best -they will go out there to get the best because they are not afraid to spend.
“That’s why they are on top of everybody. There are only two things, it's either your development is world class or you also go and spend,” he stated.
With the Africa Cup of Nations providing a breather for the DStv Premiership, Amakhosi fans have time to ponder Ouseb's words. Amakhosi return to action on February 13 against TS Galaxy where interim coach Cavin Johnson would hope to keep up the improvement he's instilled at the club in recent months.
