Legends share Soweto Derby tales

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are set for a heavyweight clash in the DStv Premiership at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, with both teams hoping to get themselves closer to Mamelodi Sundowns in the log.

Edward Motale and Teko Modise joined a panel that featured Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Fani Madida on an episode of SuperSport Unplugged, where they discussed what the derby means to them and their memories of watching and playing in the fixture.

"It's not a game I wanted to play first because as a [newly-signed] Orlando Pirates player, you want to acclimatise first. I remember I wanted to give Shaun Bartlett as shibobo and I nearly got substituted," recounted Modise on his Pirates debut, which was a pre-season Soweto Derby clash.

Modise also remembered a 2-2 draw against Chiefs at Kings Park, which was played in front of FIFA delegates and Politicians as one of the scariest he's played in.

"I think that was one of the biggest derby's that I've played in. That one was very scary because at the time, you know you're about to host a World Cup, everyone that matters is there, all eyes were on us. We actually wore suites [before the game], it was a very very important game and luckily we played a 2-2 draw. But it was a beautiful game," stated Modise.

90's Bucs legend Edward Motale shared funny tales on the various superstitions they had before a derby match and revealed how they'd prepare to face Amakhosi:

"What helped us, before the derby, If Chiefs was playing on Sunday and us on Saturday, I'd go to the ground and watch Chiefs and see how Scarra Thindwa turns and how he traps the ball etc. That's how we used to do our research as players."

Motale also emphasized the role played by supporters in the build-up to the derby:

"During the preparations, supporters give you a push. From Monday, you see busses with flags and posters and your way to training, you see all of it," he said, also mentioning how fun it was for them to win those Soweto Derby matches and how supporters would embrace them wherever they'd go afterwards.
